CBD Oil for Dogs

Everyone has been talking about CBD oil and it's benefits for humans and dogs as well. So what is this hype about and what are the benefits for dogs? I did a lot researching on my own and this is what I learned:

Cannabidiol also known as CBD is a chemical compound known found in the cannabis or marijuana plant. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is a main psychoactive compound in marijuana which causes the sensation of getting “high”. The CBD chemical compound does not give off the high sensation. The CBD compound is actually extracted from the cannabis plant and then it gets diluted with a carrier oil like hemp seed or coconut oil. Now that we know what it is, let's talk about what the benefits are.

1. Relieves Pain - CBD has anti-inflammatory properties to reduce pain. I read from here that many professional athletes use it and started to advocate for it.

2. Helps Prevent Arthritis - Because of the anti-inflammatory properties, it helps to reduce swelling in joints.

3. Reduces Anxiety - The oil has compounds that can produce calming effects

4. Fights Cancer - The substances found in this oil have been found to have an anti-tumor effect. In some cases, it has even been shown to stop cancer cell growth and kill tumor cells by blocking the tumor cell's ability to produce energy.

5. Treat Seizures and Epilepsy - According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), up to 5% of dogs suffer from seizures. Plus, did you know that the Siberian Husky breed is prone to epileptic seizures?! Most dogs that have seizures are put on drugs that can be harmful to their liver. Of course, after reading about that, I freaked out.

As far as side effects, I've read that it may cause slight drowsiness, especially when using higher doses. I started giving CDB oil to Gatsby when he goes to daycare and on long car rides so it can help mellow him out. From my observations so far, I think it does help with reducing anxiety. As a precaution, I highly suggest you consult with your veterinarian first before giving your dog CBD oil.
