This past September, we celebrated Gatsby's "Gotcha Day". I wanted to take him to a place away from the city where he can be with nature. I wanted this trip to be about him and I wanted to be apart of his world. Dogs live in the moment and I just wanted to be present with him. So, I did some research and found a company called Getaway
Getaway offers the experience of a tiny home in nature as an escape from our busy hectic lives. Their mission is to inspire balanced living. They have six outposts, each are about two hours outside of major cities like New York, Boston, Pittsburgh, etc. All Getaway locations have a campground layout and a cute tiny house inspired cabin on each lot as well as a fire-pit, picnic table and some Adirondack chairs. Each cabin has either one or two queen sized beds, a shower, toilet, lock pad on the door, heat/air-conditioning and most importantly it was pet-friendly! All this was great news for me because although I love to be submerged in nature I am really not a huge fan of camping. We decided on the Boston outpost located in Epsom, New Hampshire.
It was raining the first day we got there so all we did was hang out in the cabin. We cooked dinner and ate inside, listened to music, chatted away and fell asleep to the sounds of rain drops hitting our window.

On the second day, we had beautiful weather. We decided to hike at Bear Brook State Park which was about a 20-minute drive from our outpost. Gatsby loved it! There were so many new smells, wildlife and trails for him to explore. Birds chirping and singing, small wildlife footsteps running through the forest, water flowing down the streams were loud and clear. We let Gatsby do what he does best which is to lead the way.
After hiking over three hours, we were exhausted and decided to head back to the outpost to enjoy the rest of the evening. We did some grilling and hung out by the campfire. It felt so peaceful to just sit there in the woods, decompress and reflect on everything that's happened this year. There's comfort in listening to the fire crackling, crickets chirping, feeling the breeze of wind carrying the smells of the woods right to you. I went to sleep that night feeling so grateful to have created these special moments with Danny and Gatsby.
When I woke up the next morning I wanted to have my coffee and feed Gatsby his breakfast outside. It was a chilly morning. Gatsby and I sat on the picnic table together and watched the sunrise higher and higher. I took in a deep breath and soaked in this moment. I turned to him, gave him a kiss and said "Did you have a good time? We're going to head home now." He took a whiff of the earthy smell, turned over and licked me on my cheeks. I was content. These are the moments that will live in my memories forever.
Till next time! ♥
